Scones
I promised you scones
and so I baked them
brought them with jam and cream,
warm and fragrant –
Knowing that you would not remember
I had promised.
I promised you scones
and so I placed one in your hand
spread with jam and cream
warm and fragrant –
Knowing that you would not remember
What you’d eaten.
I promised you scones
and so I gently wiped your mouth
smeared with jam and cream,
and held your hand
Knowing that you would not remember
Who I was.
I promised you scones.
